week 7. went to watch CharlieandtheChocolateFactory yesterday and it was hilarious! that in retrospective was the only Roald Dahl book i've finished. i had never been able to finish a whole book by the author due to fact that it gradually gets boring in my oppinion. however i can strictly remember that it was right after i read the part when Willy Wonka offered Charlie to try his delicious Hot Chocolate was when i couldnt put the book down. aHHhhhhHhh. however that scene always cease to dissapoint me when its reinterpreted into the movies. but! i must grab hold of the soundtrack. the songs are just so darn spastic and funny. i would agree with jm that the kids in this remake of the movie are far more irritating and obnoxious compared to the original one. and johnny depp is so GAY/ FAGGOTY. cant wait till the premier of the CORPSE BRIDE. its been months since i've gone for a movie with jm only. we couldnt even recall when was it exactly. hITCHhIKERSgUIDEtOtHEgALAXY sprungs into mind.
i enjoy reading the older issues of Majalah Arkitek very much. its just far more informative and critical in its topics. unlike the current one which just a collage of pretty pictures and bias writtings. the truth must be told! Architecture in Malaysia is in need of serious improvement.
was reading the '86 issue the other day regarding Central Market (a.k.a Cultural Market) in Old Town being the first major adaptive reuse project in the country. and realizing how the government can be so dumb to ever consider demolishing the building. to me Central Market until now is one of the most workable urban spaces in KL. ive been there twice myself and i absolutely love the place. its not something you see often around in KL or even in the whole of M'sia. looking back im really thankful for those people who really fought for the place, plus abit of luck as well in the economy. thank God there was the 1980s, the era of conservation. i insist everyyone, to visit the place whenever they're in KL. the energy there is just so splendid. KL has a real potential to be a pedestrian oriented place. and it will work. JKR should start picking up a Jane Jacobs book to read. and Anjung Selera/ Gaya Street or even Damai Plaza should start learning a thing or two from Central Market. i should really publish my "mat rock" theory into the MA.
other things i found out by reading the MA. Dato Kington Loo was a fellow Graduate from the University of Melbourne. beginning to see the similarities. LeCorb fanatics.
im writing a paper for my postcolonial studies on Petaling Street (chinatown). initially was intended to praise in the way it was run compared with the other globalized kitsh chinatowns in the world. however when i found out that they had plunge in one of those cliche arches at the entrance, i became irritatingly annoyed and decided to write the opposite.
sigh. theCultureofDisappearance. sigh. or more like, theDisappearanceofModernAuthenticity. sigh.

this is very interesting. having been one of those crap writers for AM/MA, i know what you mean. Architecture in Malaysia is getting worst because even when they did the Awards issue, there wasn't anything good to award. It is really embarassing. This very biased writing probably started when one architect wrote an article about how ridiculous it was to have classical facades for Phileo Damansara (where TheStar is) and the architect for that project went very public and threatened to sue. I wrote a commentary which wasn't published by AM, but it was probably my favourite writing about heritage conservation in Penang. I'll show it to you. Kena censor... blaaardy.
As for Kington Loo... yes he is probably one of the most famous alumnus in Malaysia. Another one is none other than Hijjas Kasturi. Melbourne Uni is biased to Corb rather than Mies. Europe and America loves Mies. Odd.
As for Petaling Street, the new structure isn't so bad, at least the placement of the pushcarts got cleaned up and reorganised, just that the polycarbonate and steel structure looks out of place. Rain water gets in as well... But it isn't so bad. think of it as QV or Melb Central over/next to old buildings.
i dont maind the roof structure. its the chinese arch that disgusts me. yuk.
yea. i've read hijjas' thesis paper he wrote in his final year.
I'm thankful for the roof structures. At least I don't have to run scuttling for cover each time it drizzle. As for the Chinese arches, come on, it's Chinatown after all, man - if not that, what else?
By the way, do you know our STAR is designed by Kington Loo, the late Kington Loo to be exact.

yes the gateway looks out of place. but then again, not so bad la. KL u know... at least we did something to the chinatown.
the traders there still rude as ever. never liked shopping there.
